What is EVCostHub
EVCostHub is a free collection of EV charging cost calculators built for U.S. drivers. No login, no app download, no paywall. Enter your vehicle, electricity rate, and driving habits to get instant cost estimates for home charging, public charging, and EV vs gas comparisons.
How our calculators work
Every estimate starts with six inputs: battery size (kWh), vehicle efficiency (mi/kWh), electricity price ($/kWh), monthly miles, charging loss (%), and gas price with MPG for savings comparisons.
- Full charge cost = battery size x electricity rate x loss factor.
- Monthly cost = monthly miles / efficiency x electricity rate x loss factor.
- Yearly cost = monthly cost x 12.
- Gas comparison = monthly miles / MPG x gas price per gallon.
A 10% charging loss factor is used as a reasonable default. This accounts for energy lost as heat during AC-to-DC conversion and battery management. Actual loss varies by charger type, temperature, and vehicle.
Where our data comes from
Electricity rates come from the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) residential sector data. Vehicle battery size and efficiency values are based on EPA specifications for the most common trim of each model. Gas prices default to a national average but can be adjusted to match your local station.
Data is reviewed periodically and updated when new model year specs are released or when EIA publishes revised rate tables.
Important limitations
Results are estimates, not quotes or guarantees. Actual charging costs depend on factors our calculators cannot capture:
- Time-of-use electricity plans and demand charges.
- Seasonal rate changes and tiered pricing.
- Battery degradation over time.
- Cold weather reducing efficiency.
- Trim-specific battery and efficiency differences.
- Public charging network pricing and membership discounts.
Use these estimates as a starting point. Check your electric bill for your actual per-kWh rate and your vehicle window sticker for official efficiency numbers.
