Home charging guide
How much does it cost to charge an EV at home?
Most home charging cost comes down to four inputs: electricity price, vehicle efficiency, miles driven, and charging loss.

Simple formula
For a full charge, multiply battery size by your electricity price and add charging loss. For monthly cost, divide monthly miles by vehicle efficiency, then multiply by electricity price and charging loss.
- Full charge = battery kWh x electricity rate x loss factor.
- Monthly cost = miles / mi per kWh x electricity rate x loss factor.
- A 10% loss factor is a reasonable starting estimate.
Use your actual utility rate
The best input is the per-kWh rate from your electric bill. Time-of-use plans can make overnight charging much cheaper than daytime charging.
